Behind the Mask The Mystique of Surgery and the Surgeons Who Perform Them edition by David Gelber MD Professional Technical eBooks
It is a pleasure to read a book that delivers what it promises. Dr. Gelber delves into the ethos of modern surgery from an insider's point of view, as only a practicing surgeon can. He describes his triumphs with humility and his failures with equanimity. He has pulled back the curtain to allow the layman a glimpse into the psyche of a surgeon and the mystique of the profession. The book is clearly organized into preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative sections. Each section details the rituals and procedures, as well as the unexpected variables that every surgeon must be prepared to manage. Complex medical conditions and complicated surgical treatments are explained in a simple, but not simplistic, manner. A fourth chapter, appropriately titled "The lighter side" is where the author gives rein to his curmudgeon side and indulges in satire, some parts of which may be misconstrued by the casual reader. As a surgeon I appreciated the realistic depiction of the joys and tribulations of the specialty. The interested layman as well as the professional should find the material engaging and enlightening.

Behind the Mask The Mystique of Surgery and the Surgeons Who Perform Them edition by David Gelber MD Professional Technical eBooks Reviews
I'm sorry to say the book is trite and poorly written. Author should stick to surgery.
I'm looking into medical school and thinking about the different specialties out there, and this was an excellent book giving the highlights, lowlights and philosophical aspects of general surgery. I would definitely recommend it to others.
Interesting and easy for the non medical person to understand..As a former ICU nurse, thank you for your complimentary remarks
I was a scant few pages in (page 16 in my paperback edition) when I saw " ... God's perfect creation ..." and, shortly after, "Of course, I don't in any way imagine any man ... to be nobler than God" and shortly after that "... living in this fallen world ..." and then my stomach began to growl, the way it always did in church, and I thought I heard the distant Thump! Thump! of someone beating on a Bible and I gave a windy sigh and wondered whether I wanted to continue. The only thing that annoys me more than preaching is sneaky preaching -- The Lamb in sheep's clothing. However, I soldiered on in the hope that I'd eventually learn some stuff about surgeons and surgeries (and I did; I'll never again take my -- or anyone else's -- omentum for granted). Then I reached page 77 and found, nestled in the second paragraph, mention by the author of a novel written by the author. Gaaaaaack! I hate it when they do that! List that stuff on the page that's usually reserved for that purpose -- you know, in the front of the book!
I'd like to see another edition of this book after a scalpel has been taken to (1) the quotes at the chapter heads (2) the religious stuff (3) the apostrophe in "word's" in the second para of page 123 and a few other things besides. In my opinion, there's some very interesting information here, but it could use considerable tightening up.
Great read, says this OR Nurse. Gerber knows what he's doing and really has got his timing down! I love the insight, the candour and the tutorials, all rolled into one. I have his next book already in the que.
If you are interested in the way the body works, this book will be of interest. It focuses on the functions of interest to a surgeon. Only a very small percentage of the book is devoted to case histories. Some of it reads like a text book.As a physician I found the book quite interesting, but it might prove tedious to those without a deeper desire for medical knowledge.
Unless you enjoy reading about the perfect creation, man, and his creator, god, this is not the book for you. The sample I read gave no hint of the religious fervor I was to encounter after I purchased the book. Very little science is given credit for the modern medical marvels we have today- they are due to divine intervention, if the author is to be believed.
